Art Department

McGehee art is fun, exciting, and enriching. The primary purpose of our program is the development of confident, creative self expression for students in various art forms. Authentic intellectual and imaginative skills are employed in the process of making art. Risk taking, occasional failure, and invention are equally encouraged.

To ensure aesthetic growth our art department provides:

  • a nurturing yet challenging climate
  • an on-going spiral process of learning
  • an understanding and real use of art elements and principles
  • exposure to art history and respect for artists in society
  • integration of art with various disciplines of study
  • use of a wide variety of safe, professional art media
  • development of technical skills
  • a working environment to develop a true sense of industry

Each year students at McGehee build upon previous art experiences - further developing individual abilities, interest, commitment and self-expression. A solid visual arts foundation provides entry to the Upper School program in the ninth grade. A variety of credit programs can be pursued at this level, including mentorship in the Senior year.

Field trips to galleries, museums, etc. are a valid part of the curriculum. Occasionally, guest artists visit our school or students visit their studios. McGehee art students also exhibit their artworks in school as well as in the community.
