Welcome to the McGehee School Library

The major goal of the library program, in collaboration with the classroom teacher, is to motivate students to enjoy reading and to make reading a life-long pleasurable activity. The mission of the library is to promote literacy and to educate students to be effective users of ideas and information. Many special events and activities such as author visits, Book Week, and BEAR NIGHT are held to promote reading.

The Adelaide Wisdom Benjamin '50 Library serves the entire McGehee community. The Middle/Upper school librarian, Wendy Bruton, works closely with the faculty in order to integrate research skills into the classroom. Fifth through Eighth grades have scheduled visits to the library to receive instruction in library skills and participate in reading workshop. Middle and Upper school students are introduced to various research databases and are encouraged to use these databases as resources for assignments. Students also consult with the librarian for book recommendations for their class reading lists.

Uppers School students may participate in the Independent Reading Acknowledgement Program (IRA) that is conducted by the Upper School librarian. The program offers the opportunity to explore reading beyond the required classroom texts and to participate in a discussion based review of the titles they have read. Upon successful completion of all assignments, the students will receive and Independent Reading Acknowledgement designation on their transcript.
