Reggio Emilia
The Reggio Emilia philosophy emerged from Reggio Emilia, Italy, following World War II. It was created as a progressive, innovative type of school that focused on family and community. These preschools are now world renowned. In response to the growing interest of the Reggio approach, the North American Reggio Emilia Alliance (NAREA) has formed a network of educators and created professional development initiatives. In turn many schools are now considered Reggio inspired, focusing on each school's unique community and culture with the root of the philosophy as its core.
At Little Gate, our Reggio inspired focus is:
- Children are curious and capable. Children are born ready to learn from experimentation and participation in their environment.
- The environment itself is a teacher.
- Using natural, recycled, and open-minded materials encourages children to create and define their purpose.
- Engaging and involving the community in authentic learning experiences.
- Teachers facilitate, observe, record and enhance the children's interests.
- Outdoor environments are extensions of the classroom.
Little Gate engages in research and discussion, actively furthering our knowledge and strengthening our commitment to our Reggio journey.
