Pre-K Colors of Us

September 26th, 2022

Girls in the PreK Purple Ladybug class have been learning all about one another. What makes us unique, and what makes us different? The book Colors of Us illustrates the many shades of brown that make up a person's skin tone and after reading the book, the girls enjoyed trying to find classroom objects that matched their skin tone so that all could see everyone a little bit differently. With a little help from their teachers, the girls discussed the question, "Can you know everything about a person by just looking at their skin color?" PreK girls talked about things that make up a person that you cannot see, such as things they like to do or what food they like, prompting them to realize that it is better to get to know someone rather than thinking we know someone by the way they look. To reinforce the idea of having visible and invisible parts of our identity, the girls completed an art activity using pictures. A picture of their face was on one side of the paper and on the flip side they could glue magazine pictures or draw their own pictures to help illustrate themselves. Creating these identity panels was a great exercise, especially in learning something about all of their classmates.
