Girls & Sports

Our program develops student-athletes mentally, physically, and emotionally. We offer a wide variety of sports to provide girls of all ages every opportunity to participate, achieve and excel.

Experienced faculty and coaches encourage each girl to realize her full potential, while fostering self-esteem and competitiveness. We are proud that at least 83% of our Middle School girls and at least 60% of our Upper School girls participate in one sport or more.

According to statistics from the National Federation of High Schools, studies indicate that girls’ participation in sports offers a broad range of academic benefits. For instance, young women who play sports tend to have higher grades and score higher on standardized tests than those who do not.

Participation in school athletics can also have positive effects later in life, according to research highlighted by the New York Times. Sports participation decreases a young woman’s chance of developing obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis, and breast cancer, among other diseases. High School athletes are also less likely to smoke cigarettes or use drugs than peers who don’t play sports.

"At McGehee our coaches are committed to providing an education based athletic experience for our student-athletes. Athletics is a major component of the McGehee experience thanks to the many qualities our girls develop to become strong, competent women."
