Day of the Dead

November 1st, 2023

Not only did the Spanish I and Anthropology classes commemorate Day of the Dead (Dia de Los Muertos), a holiday that is celebrated throughout Mexico—7th and 8th Grade students did as well. This celebration focuses on gatherings to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey. Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars called ofrendas honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, flowers and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed. The Spanish I and Anthro students built their own ofrenda displayed in Benjamin Hall. 7th and 8th grader Spanish students learned about the meaning and importance of"alebrijes" and had to create their own alebrije, mixing different animals into one. Once complete these Middle School students presented and described their alebrijes to the class, using the vocabulary and grammar they learned.⁣
