Pre-K MLK Day Preparations

January 31st, 2023

As they prepared for the MLK holiday, Pre-K Yellow Ladybugs learned about the new sculpture honoring MLK that was unveiled January 13th in Boston. The sculpture is called "The Embrace" and the artist, Hank Willis Thomas, was inspired by a photograph of Coretta Scott King and Martin Luther King, Jr, embracing after Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. These students loved the sculpture, read up on his legacy and then the class explored what the word embrace means. Thomas said the monument signified the bond of love, and in interviews he talked about how 'we hug someone our hearts touch in a literal way.' Because of the interest and energy of this class, teachers reached out to US Art teacher, Sarah Wiseman, who helped the girls brainstorm ideas of ways to create their own art celebrating an embrace. The yellow ladybugs each posed for a picture hugging a friend. Ms. Wiseman projected the photos and created a large sketch drawing. She then introduced the class to local artist B. Mike's work. Yellow ladybugs then used oil pastels to color their line drawings with amazing results!
