Little Gate Dr. King Mural
January 20th, 2022
This week Little Gate students were encouraged to answer some questions after reading books about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They were prompted to think and wonder about their dreams, how we are alike, as well as ways to help our community. Each class was invited to the community space to create a collage. Students were given materials with inspirational words, quotes by and photos of Dr. King, and pictures of themselves. The goal—to create a mural that shows Little Gate united as a community.
The Aqua Elephants read I am Brave: A Little Book, about Dr. King's life. They learned about his most famous speech, "I Have A Dream" and how he spoke about being fair to others. The class discussed why it is important to include all of your friends, be kind and to treat everyone with respect. Their discussion continued with examples of being kind to one another which prompted everyone to hug each other and share their toys. The group also talked about themselves and what was alike and what was different. Oliver added, "Fair means love." Weezy said, "Some are boys, and some are girls." Reese said, "Their skin color is different." Teachers agreed this was a great activity to model kindness, inclusion, and empathy while practicing language, fine motor skills and creative expression.
