College Counseling

At McGehee, college counseling is a four-year partnership, charting each student’s unique journey as she moves through the selection process focusing on the key elements of choice, suitability and affordability.

The school, students and parents together study all aspects of the potential fit between student and institution, leading women to uniformly successful academic, emotional and professional outcomes.

College placement for the Class of 2024 was phenomenal and the video below helps tell the story of how McGehee girls become Leading Women. These college freshmen are all forging their own paths, attending colleges and universities far and wide, and now continuing their education at institutions they once dreamed about.

When does college prep begin?

You begin cultivating a transcript as soon as you enter 9th grade. While you don't need to map out a full plan for applying to colleges until 11th grade, regular check-ins with your advisor and college counselor will help you feel confident that you’re on track to reach your goals.

How will I find a college or university that is best for me?

Talking with the college counselor about your interests, strengths, and goals can help you identify schools that suit you academically, financially, and culturally. Through Junior Seminar, you will begin researching schools and creating a list of best-fit colleges.

Should I take the ACT or SAT?

Most colleges accept scores from either test. Even if your dream school is test-optional, you may need test scores to be considered for merit-based financial assistance or for scholarship applications. Your college counselor can help you identify the tests that will best display your strengths.

How do colleges view extracurricular activities within an application?

What you do with your time outside of class shows colleges who you are and what qualities you’ll bring to their campuses. Your college counselor can help you find the opportunities best suited for you and help you use them to present the real you—beyond grades and test scores—to colleges.

How do I create a compelling high school transcript and course schedule?

Working with your academic advisor and the college counselor on what courses to take and when will make college applications less stressful later on.

Jessica Henrickson

“The heart of the college process at McGehee is about self-discovery and celebration. Our girls know themselves and our school culture supports this. They sense and they find their “fit,” using their potential as the reigning criteria. I attribute their savvy to the McGehee environment, one that shows each student who she is now and what she can do with her marvelous potential.”
