Amelia Phillips

Amelia Phillips is a leading woman in many ways at school and beyond. This year she is serving as the Editor-in-Chief for publications, in charge of the 2023-2024 yearbook, The Spectator. About this role, she wrote, “As editor-in-chief for the yearbook this year, I feel that I have learned many important skills from Mr. McLetchie that I will continue to use throughout my college years and future.”

Amelia’s greatest extracurricular interest is in cars, race cars in particular, and this passion of hers has her currently immersed in a senior internship with AJ Foyt Racing in Indianapolis, Indiana in preparation of the Sonsio Grand Prix and the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500. As Amelia stated, “I am a race car driver, and I race Formula Vee, which is vintage Formula 1. The cars I race are manual, and I spend about 4 days each month during the year traveling for races, acting as my own mechanic for my race car. I attended racing school at Eagles Canyon Raceway to earn my racing license when I was sixteen, and I have also been building a 1971 Volkswagen Super Beetle convertible with my dad as my first car. I’ve grown up helping my dad restore cars since I was two years old.”

A member of the 14+ Year Club, Amelia remarked “McGehee has prepared me for my future in many more ways than one, but the one I feel resonates with me the most is how to be seen and heard in my daily life whether it is in the classroom, a workspace, or even being with friends.”

Her favorite McGehee tradition is Singing on the Stairs and she described her experience this year as a senior performing the senior song. “It was a special moment our class got to share, and I don't think any of us expected to be that emotional. I really enjoyed being able to experience it with my classmates.”

After visiting and being accepted early decision into The College of Charleston, Amelia commented that she loved the welcoming feel of the campus and when she visited the college she felt at home, and like she fit right in.
