Kali Magana joined the Class of 2024 as a sophomore and she is soaring high. With a plethora of athletic accolades and accomplishments, a few recent highlights stand out the most. At the State Meet at LSU in early May, the McGehee Hawks won their second consecutive LHSAA Class 1A State Championship, where Kali was voted Outstanding Track Performer, winning the State Championship in the 100M, 200M, 400M (New Class 1A State Record) and anchoring McGehee’s 4x400M relay team. At the LHSAA Indoor Track & Field State Meet in February, the Hawks secured a remarkable 4th place finish among Division 2 schools. Leading the charge again was Kali who claimed the State Champion title in the 800M run, breaking the D2 indoor record.

Kali was heavily recruited for collegiate sports, ultimately choosing the University of Houston for a full scholarship for Track and Field. The cherry on top of the cake is Kali will be working with Olympic Champion Carl Lewis, Coach of Houston’s Track & Field team. For those not aware, Carl Lewis is one of only four Olympic athletes to have won nine Olympic gold medals, and is widely recognized as one of the greatest athletes of all time. Exciting times are ahead for Kali and the Houston Cougars!

Kali commented, “One of my favorite things about McGehee is the bond we have as one big class. McGehee has prepared mentally and physically for sure, but when going through a hard time, I never thought I could go through, my time at McGehee has helped me create the best friendships and relationships with students in all grades. ”

Her favorite McGehee tradition is May Day. She loves all of it, commenting, ”I liked it all, especially acting as big sisters to our little sisters, and creating new friendships.”
